NICU Night #56 - Timmy's First Mommy Bath & Full Feeds!!!

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Another fabulous night!  Timmy received his first full feed ever of 36mls at 8pm.

So very nice to have Melissa back.  She had promised me Timmy's bath on Sunday but she didn't have him so we got to do it Tuesday night instead.  And how does one bathe a ventilated baby with an ostomy bag?  With lots of towels and washcloths!

She folded about 5 towels in half lengthwise and stuck them under him, handed me the Johnsons Baby Wash and held and turned him while I suds him up.  He was starting to smell not so fresh Monday night so it was nice to bring back that sweet baby smell.  As we went to clean around the ostomy bag, we noticed it was leaking again so we had to change that.  I got to make my first EConceal ring and Melissa did a fabulous job putting the new bag in place.  Then we finished washing Timmy and getting him dressed and tucked in for another snuggle.  His ET tube tape was also starting to look a little loose so he got another tape job as well.

Not sure why, but Timmy was a little irritable while I was holding him against my chest.  We adjusted so that he was resting in the crook of my left arm and he did much better.

Stats for the night were essentially the same with the exceptions that Timmy was back down to 5 lbs. 2 oz. and the doctors had knocked his PEEP (positive-end expiratory pressure) down to 5.  Looking hopeful for another extubation attempt.

Wish I could say the same for the reanastomosis.  Still no word from Dr. Cosantino there.  But we're getting good at changing the ostomy bag.  Melissa pulled it up herself Tuesday night and got the moist surprise.  Alas, when we went to change the bag, she discovered we were out of the new preemie size bags so Timmy now has a huge bag on that covers his belly.  Since he was receiving bag changes twice a shift due to leaks, we opted to skip the EConceal, as Timmy's skin is looking much much better and I'm sure the constant changes aren't helping.

Then Melissa retaped Timmy yet again.  Not sure what's going on there, but no one is willing to risk another self-extubation right now.

Definitely a great night for s'more celebrating.  Let's just say that chocolate graham crackers and Ghirardelli caramel squares just bring dessert to a whole new level of chocolaty goodness!
